Melville Bissell didn't plan on making carpet sweepers – he and his wife Anna ran a busy crockery shop in Grand Rapids, Michigan. But Melville had allergies, aggravated in part by the packing sawdust that seemed to drift and fall throughout the store. Anna struggled to keep the floor free of the dust, and in an effort to make her task easier, Melville developed the first Bissell carpet sweeper, which he patented in 1876.
Other manufacturing companies were making sweepers at that time, but they didn't work as well as the Bissell, which was lighter weight, worked on uneven floors, and picked up dirt without creating a dust cloud. When people saw the Bissell carpet sweeper, they wanted one too!
As word of Bissell's sweeper swept across the state, Melville and Anna loaded the new appliances in their buggy and sold them door-to-door. Bissell became a household word, and not just in the Midwest - Queen Victoria once once demanded that the carpets of Buckingham Palace be "Bisselled!"
In 1883 Melville and Anna incorporated Bissell and built their first manufacturing plan in Grand Rapids. Since then, the Bissell company has ranked as an industry leader in the design and manufacture of household cleaning appliances, with products sold in more than 60 countries.
As standards and lifestyles changed, the company introduced products that helped people clean better while saving time. In the 1950s Bissell invented a detergent and carpet shampooer that reduced the time and drudgery of carpet cleaning. Addressing the growth of small living spaces, the company introduced convenient, lightweight cleaners that people could use quickly and store easily, such as their electric broom.
Bissell made deep carpet cleaning appliances (only only available to professional cleaners) available to everyone, the ProHeat and Powersteamer series, with the six new models in the ProHeat series featuring on-board heaters to optimize performance.
