Film Camps – A Summer Film Camp
Film camps offer future directors, screenwriters, cameramen and editors hands-on experience in all aspects of creating a short film.
No experience? Never held a camera? Young filmmakers need only bring their imagination and a willingness to learn to film camp – classes and workshops will cover the fundamentals and beyond.
Media arts camps offer students the chance to learn about various aspects of filmmaking, including:
- Digital video in numerous styles, including documentary, science fiction and film noir, following an idea through inception, storyboard, shooting, directing and editing.
- Video narrative introduces students to the techniques and theory of developing and producing short-story ideas that can be shot on video and digitally edited.
- The art and creation of animated film, and opportunities to explore a variety of techniques, materials and design and writing for animation. Drawing ability is not a requirement to participate in an animation camp, but classes covering the basics, including computer graphics, are usually in the camp curriculum.
- Technical production workshops challenge participants in all areas of technical design and production, with focus on scenic design, lighting design, sound design, technical direction, stage management, computer-aided design, film and TV production, costuming and even scenic construction.

Summer film camps can be expensive; partly due to the cost of high-tech equipment students will be working with, and also due to the cost of providing a professional instruction staff experienced in visual arts. Camps usually take place on a school campus, taking advantage of a residential setting with media arts facilities.
Film camps are generally aimed at older youth who bring not only a passion for film, but also a high level of discipline and commitment. Students learn to work collaboratively as a team, to lead and to problem-solve. For a summer experience that could set the stage for career in film, consider a film camp for your son or daughter.
