Top-ranked Northwestern University in Evanston, on the banks of Lake Michigan, offers a wide range of summer camp programs for academically talented youth in pre-kindergarten through 12 th grade. The university's Center for Talent Development schedules summer programs geared for specific grade ranges, with nearly a hundred classes in the sciences, literature, humanities, writing, history and language. Another renowned institute, the University of Chicago, sponsors a variety of daytime and residential academic camps with instruction and activities focused on mathematics, the biological sciences, fine arts and filmmaking. College credit may be earned for some of the coursework.
While it is the largest body of water to border the state, Lake Michigan is just one of hundreds of lakes in the region, and there are many traditional and specialty camps in Illinois that are situated along their shores. Green space in the way of parks and wilderness is carefully tended and protected in this midwestern state, and there are many outdoor camp programs that take advantage of the natural and beautiful landscape.
Urban camps set in Chicago that specialize in fine arts and performing arts programs are a draw for thousands of youngsters every summer. Museum programs, theater and acting camps, film production and music performance programs operate out of many of the city colleges and private schools that can offer residential as well as daytime programs for attendees. Many of these camps require a length application process that may even include a portfolio or audition. Be sure to investigate the requirements and meet all deadlines if you are hoping to enroll your youngster in one of these highly sought after performing or visual arts programs.
Sports camps are big in Illinois, particularly those that work with high school baseball, football and basketball teams and individual athletes. High-intensity sports camps hosted at Ohio universities may offer opportunities to showcase a particular player's talent or provide a chance to perform in front of a recruiter.
