Kids Summer Camps – Summer Camp for Children

Kids' camps offer youth an opportunity to learn important life skills, make new friends, explore new interests and develop character.

There is a wide array of camps for kids, planned around a sleep away or day camp setting. Choose a traditional camping experience for your child, with a well-rounded roster of activities, or choose from broad range of specialty camps if your child has a particular interest he or she wants to pursue over the summer.

As a parent, you are the best judge whether your child is ready for a day or sleep away camp environment.

A day camp is set up to allow kids to participate in camp activities during the day, yet stay at home with mom and dad at night. If it is your younger child's first exposure to camping, a day camp might be a good introduction to a traditional camping experience.

Summer Camp

Sleep away camps for kids may offer lengths of stay in one-, two-, three- or four-week sessions (or longer), and may be either traditional or specialty in nature. The decision to go to a sleep away camp, and selecting the camp itself, should be a decision made between parent and child. You need to know what your child is hoping to achieve, or what he is prepared for, and your child express his feelings about the camp programs you are looking into. If possible, both you and your child should visit a sleep away camp and meet the staff before final decisions are made.

A chief concern of staff and parents when it comes to sleep away camp situations is the potential for your child to experience homesickness. A thorough camp brochure should offer guidelines on how to prepare your child, and yourself, for the eventuality of homesickness and what can be done to forestall it. If your child still ends up feeling lonesome for home, assure yourself that counselors are well trained to assist your child in dealing with those emotions.

A traditional camping experience for kids will include outdoor recreation, arts and crafts, individual and team activities and more. This kind of camp is well suited to children who enjoy having a variety of things to do, and who aren't ready to devote long periods of time to a single endeavor.

Specialized camps focus instruction on a primary activity or area of study, like soccer or science. For children wanting to improve performance, hone skills or learn a new subject, a specialty camp is an ideal option. Since campers are just kids, a knowledgeable staff will make sure their intense study or physical workshops are balanced with relaxing and fun activities as well.

Academic camps for kids offer programs centered on computer technology, math and science, writing, language, and cultural studies, and more, and are specifically designed to challenge and motivate kids in the elementary through middle-school age bracket. If your youngster is interested in computer-related activities, like gaming or digital photography, or has a fascination for marine life, consult a directory to find an academic specialty camp to fit your needs.
