Music Camps – A Summer Music Camp

Spending time at a summer music camp may strike just the right chord with your musically inclined child.

Music camps provide opportunities and enrichment in all areas of music. Students can have the chance to perform in orchestras, bands, choirs, jazz ensembles and combos, chamber music, recitals and concerts. Often a camp session will coincide with a local music festival, affording even more chances for campers to display their skills.

There are a wide variety of music camps, offering varying degrees of instruction in all kinds of music including rock and classic, vocal and instrumental. Instructors are usually professional musicians or educators in the field, and often guest artists (who might also be alumni!) will drop by to conduct a class, perform in a concert or simply offer encouragement.

Music Camp
Musical training builds confidence, teaches concentration, offers social opportunities and helps youngsters develop sensitivity to, and pride in, the artistic side of life.

A music camp experience will foster your child's enthusiasm and creative abilities; provide specialized, individualized music lessons, and present opportunities to join with other children of all skill levels in performances, practices and impromptu musical interludes.

There are music camps from coast to coast, in every state, almost every city or region of the United States. Whether your toddler is just beginning to explore the wonders of musical expression, or your teenager is poised for the college concert stage, a music camp to fit their age, their talent and meet their goals is probably just a car ride away.

Introductory music day camps are almost standard fare for a town's recreation department. Usually geared for very young children, a musical day camp might provide some simple instruments, like keyboards, drums, cymbals and a triangle for little ones to get their hands on and make a joyful noise! Singing as a group, learning fun songs, listening to all kinds of music – camps offering this exposure introduce musical opportunities to little folks that may spark a passion in the years to come!

Residential music camps for gifted and talented kids offer programs for the future professional musician or students who consider their music as essential as oxygen. Among the oldest, most highly regarded camps of this type is Interlochen, situated in Michigan.

Young musicians must apply to Interlochen, and if accepted, will be offered classes in three divisions, according to school grade of the participant. At this camp, and others of the same repute, there is a concentration on individualized coursework in band, orchestra, jazz, piano, strings, and more, and includes class work in music theory, composition, etc. All levels of advanced and intermediate instruction are available, as well as a full range of vocal technique instruction and choral work. Students perform together and separately, and learn as much from each other as they do from the staff.

Music study and appreciation enlarge children's outlook, enhance their learning skills and provide a creative outlet. Music camps serve to promote a love and learning of all types of music, and along the way, focus on developing life skills and a strong work ethic.
