Inpatient Drug Rehab - Long Term Substance Abuse Treatment Centers

These programs are almost always physically situated away from the abusing teen's home community. They are indicated when other more traditional treatment approaches have failed and when it is determined that allowing the teen to remain in the home community increases the risk of resuming the substance abusing behavior.

Long term residential treatment is also indicated when it has been determined that the teen's family situation is such that his or her recovery and continued sobriety would be compromised by remaining in the family home itself. This is exemplified in those homes where there are other family members engaged in substance abuse or in those situations where the family is unable to support the teen's recovery effort.

Another advantage of residential programs is that teens with justice system involvement are extracted from communities where they are likely to offend again in connection with their substance abusing behavior.

Drug Rehab

The legal system tends to look favorably upon successfully completed residential programs and factor that completion into making future legal dispositions regarding the teen.

Residential treatment programs provide an ongoing twenty four hour per day structured living experience for the teenager. Living accommodations are typically dormitory style with close and ongoing staff supervision. There is on site medical, nursing, psychiatric, social work and psychological staff which coordinate with trained residential counselors. Home visits for teens are minimal during the initial phases of residential treatment and become more frequent as the teen demonstrates progress in the program. Parental visitation at the residential facility is usually limited both in terms of length and frequency and when it does occur it is for treatment purposes. Visitors are limited to immediate and at times extended family and are subject to staff screening.

Residents may be subjected to random drug testing and rooms may be regularly searched for the presence of abusable substances.

Typical residential treatment lengths of stay vary between six and twelve months. There is always an on site school which must comply with applicable state and local educational regulations.

Residential treatment facilities feature regular multidisciplinary staff meetings where each teen's progress is comprehensively discussed and treatment plans updated or otherwise revised. Discharge conditions are planned as early as possible and tuned to the teen's successful completion of the program.
