Medical Marijuana - Oregon's Laws and Information
Oregon is one of the twelve states that allows medical marijuana. The Oregon Medical Marijuana Act was approved on November 3 rd, 1998. Many other states want to model their future programs after Oregon's due to the well-organized structure of it. The Public Health Division that controls Oregon's medical marijuana program not only administers the medical marijuana cards, but also gives information on all angles of the drug like the pros and cons.
To qualify for medical marijuana in Oregon you need a doctor's written consent. You also need a legitimate medical need that you will benefit from using the drug. These illnesses are Alzheimer's agitation, cancer, glaucoma, HIV, AIDS, cachexia, severe pain, severe nausea, seizures not limited to epilepsy, persistent muscle spasms, and multiple sclerosis. A person under the age of eighteen must have written consent from their parent or legal guardian in order to receive the use of medical marijuana in Oregon. The parent or guardian must also agree to control the distribution of the minor's dose.
Unlike California, Oregon does have a state regulation as to how much you are allowed to posses and cultivate. You are allowed to have up to 24oz of dried pot ready to smoke on your person. You are allowed to grow up to 6 mature plants, which means they are over 12 inches in height and 12 inches in width. 18 immature seedlings are allowed, but they must be less than 12 inches in all directions with no buds or flowers. Without the registry identification card you will face criminal penalties, which vary depending on much you are carrying.
To obtain a medical marijuana card in Oregon, you must first get written consent from a doctor or copies of your current condition that qualify you for the use of medicinal marijuana and give these documents to the Oregon Medical Marijuana Program, known as the OMMP. You will then get an application that requires you to tell them the name of the person growing the pot and where it will be grown. This person has to agree to a limited background check. This program is located in the Health Division of the Oregon Health Department of Human Resources. They in turn administer the cards with a fee of $100 or $20 for those in an Oregon Health Plan or SSI. This card allows you to be immune from criminal charges of possession, using, and paraphernalia as long as you follow the guidelines.
Oregon has a program that will help you do all this called Mothers Against Misuse and Abuse. They will help you understand the process on how to get registered step by step. They have doctors that help you gather the information needed for the medical use of marijuana, because not all doctors in Oregon agree with the medical use of marijuana. They also provide information on the harmful effects and how it interacts with other medicines so you know what you are getting into.
