Typically offered during the summer or in a day-camp format during winter school breaks, a hoops program can be beneficial for boys and girls of all age and experience levels. However, depending on the caliber and intensity of instruction, location and duration, basketball camps can be expensive.
Nonprofit organizations like the YMCA or town recreation departments may offer basketball day camps that will provide your young athlete with instruction in a recreational atmosphere and at considerably less cost than a private sleep away camp.
Camps designed for serious young players who are trying to get some off-season experience and skill development are usually operated in a residential setting, often on a college or private school campus with dorms and top notch sports facilities. Camps in this mode schedule intense workshops in defensive and offensive techniques and daily games to cap off practices, and the cost reflects the investment in staff and facilities.
Basketball camps sponsored by professionals players, like the Michael Jordan camps, or hosted at the school homes of top college teams like the Duke Blue Devils and the UConn Huskies, are popular for high-school hoopsters who want to showcase their talent in front of top-level coaches.
There are all-girls, all-boys, and co-ed basketball camps, general technique camps and some specializing in just shooting, or defensive or offensive play.
Camps that have a high attendance (above the 100 enrollee mark) will divide the camp into divisions according to age, skill and gender. Individualized or small workshops may also be offered to address various aspects of the game, like three-point shots, dribbling, zone defense, free throws, etc.
As important as the level of instruction offered and skill level attained, just as significant is what your child stands to gain in self-confidence, sportsmanship and leadership – attributes that will extend far beyond the ability to make a jump shot or behind-the-back pass.
