Ask yourself the following questions to see if you've got the spirit for cheerleading camp:
- Are you willing to try new things? Not just for yourself but for the overall benefit of the squad?
- Do you help your teammates? If you see a squad member struggling with a skill will you stop to offer constructive advice and help?
- Do you work on your cheerleading skills every day? Do you realize you can always improve something? And that cheerleading is made up of a lot different aspects – dance, gymnastics, choreography?
- Can you follow directions and take constructive criticism?
The best cheerleaders work the hardest – a squad is only as good as its weakest member, so it benefits everyone to rejuvenate routines, refresh skills and rally spirit at cheerleading camp.
Camp is all about improving your squad's abilities, and that begins with instruction and practice in mastering the basic stunts as a group and individually. Those dizzying pyramids and flying handsprings are basic stunts rolled into one seamless, synchronized routine – accomplish those and the toughest part is over.
Every camp organization has its own way of teaching motions, stunts and spotting, as well as cheerleading philosophy. Before signing yourself or your team up for a camp, find out if the program's mission statement is in synch with your squad's goals.
Other than in competitive situations, there are no hard and fast rules for cheerleading; choose a camp program that is dedicated to building skills in a safe environment, where your team's unique style and spirit can flourish.
