The goalkeeping position is one of the most demanding, high-pressure positions in many sports, including soccer, lacrosse, ice hockey, even water polo! Being a goalie requires you to excel in a variety of intense situations, and be both physically and mentally fit to undertake the responsibility. Participating in a goalie camp geared for your specific sport can help you focus on your mental game as well as your physical game.
The key to being a successful goalkeeper at any level, in any sport, is consistency and preparation. A goalie camp geared to your particular game will work on your technical base, and take you to the next echelon in your sport or league. Camps specializing in honing goalie skills provide an opportunity to develop the skills and discipline it takes to achieve your goals.
Length And Location
Once you have determined what type of camp that you would like to attend, another key decision is where the camp is and how long it lasts. At a goalie day camp, which may be offered through your local parks and recreation department or area school district, participants train each day and return home in the evening. A residential camp setting allows athletes to spend the nights at camp.
Consider the maturity of the player when choosing a goalie camp. If your child hasn't spent nights away from home before, it may not be wise to send him to a week-long sleep away hockey camp where homesickness might negatively affect his experience.
Some parents plan to vacation in the locale of their goalie camper, so they visit and watch scrimmages and games. For very young players who just aren't emotionally ready for a residential camp, some organizations offer a parent/player camp, where a parent can accompany their youngster and participate in training and activities.
Goalie Goals
Some sports camps offer concentrated programs in goalkeeping for players with little or no experience, a sort of program within a program. The focus of a goalie "mini camp" will be on fundamentals, though usually with an introduction to more complex techniques. A goalie course allows budding athletes to determine if that is a position they might have a continuing interest in.
Goalie camps allow players to develop a strong foundation of goalkeeping skills while having fun at the same time.
