A summer surf camp can provide you with the basic skills necessary to get you up and surfing, to offering you instruction in advanced techniques that will improve and enrich your surfing experience.
Look for a surf camp that offers instruction to accommodate all skill levels, from beginner to intermediate to virtual pro caliber. Most camps require little in the way of previous experience or surfing skill, but do want participants to prove they are strong, confident ocean and surf zone swimmers – so make sure you can swim 200 yards without sinking before buying your surf board.
A reputable camp will have a "safety first" credo – offering expert instruction and challenging activities in a fun, safe environment with a focus on protecting yourself in the water and in your sport. Physical conditioning, camaraderie, self respect and good clean fun are among the chief benefits of surf camp. The surfing rules of safety should be reviewed until second nature – chief among them: never surf alone. The ease experienced athletes display as they surf out on the breaks comes with one thing: practice. It takes constant practice, surfing many types of breaks, to develop the skills, strength and grace that they exude. A surf camp can't bring a novice to that level in a week, month, probably not even a year – that part is up to the camper. A solid exposure to the basics, though, will help beginners get off to a good start in this exciting sport.
Beginner surfers will be taught the fundamentals at a surf camp – how to handle their board, how to paddle, turn and roll, duck dive, stand and balance technique, with additional instructions on how to and read the ocean conditions (swell, tide), board and equipment care and maintenance, and safety guidelines.
Advanced surfers will be exposed to additional skills and technique training, always with reinforcement on how to safely maneuver in the ocean.
Summer surf camps are in operation along the Pacific and Atlantic coasts, the Gulf of Mexico, and of course, along the shores of Hawaii. Surf seekers head out all over the world, though, to catch the big waves, so camps are sprouting up in Costa Rica, Mexico, Panama and other Central and South American locales.
