Volleyball can be played for fun in a casual outdoor setting, or competitively in a formal school environment. Most importantly, volleyball can be enjoyed by individuals of all ages and abilities, which makes it a great sport for physical education classes and an enjoyable summer group activity in a traditional camp setting.
A volleyball camp, however, is handled like most other team sports camps – training and education are intense, competition is promoted, and a solid background in the sport may be required. Programs in this echelon don't need to start with the fundamentals – that's probably been covered in classes and prior day camps.
At volleyball camp, good players will get better, gain expertise, work on their mental as well as physical game, and receive instruction via attentive coaching and even video analysis. These camps usually take place at a college or university atmosphere that provides nearby dorms and dining halls.
Residential summer volleyball camps fall into two categories:
- Whole team camps, geared to offer general instruction and competition opportunities to an entire school team
- Position camps, where current or aspiring team members receive individual instruction and practice on a specific position.
Team camps
Often coaches, typically at the high school level, want to get a head start on the competition and opt to send the entire volleyball team to a sports camp. The coach will advise the camp staff of the skills he or she wants the team to learn as a whole, and areas for improvement within the team membership.
An instructor will be assigned to the team throughout the camp term, and within the framework of practice and team play, the school coach's goals will be addressed. With such an open level of communication between the school and the camp, the team is able to receive highly customized training and education, and effective preparation for the upcoming season.
Position camps
The chief tenet of a volleyball position camp is the offer training in specific positions (middle hitter, blocker, outside/power hitter and setter), to individual athletes of similar age and skill level. A purely position camp can provide the young athlete with learning opportunities that far exceed what a general skills camp can offer.
Played for sheer fun or fierce competition, volleyball is a game of strategy, strength, cooperation and yes, even finesse – gain those skills at volleyball camp and you can apply them to all aspects of your life.
