Digital Piano Signal Processing – Making The Connections

The "heart' of your electronic keyboard is a network of microprocessors, which give you the capability of creating new original and highly complex musical pieces. Like a PC, your digital piano maintains a ‘hard drive' or storage capability, where music samplers reflecting ‘source' instruments such as grand piano, brass instruments, string instruments, percussion, and so on are stored. You select a ‘voice' or instrument, and then play.

Think of ‘sound' bytes as ‘data' bytes and you'll quickly see the need for thinking through your current, and future, cable and connection needs. Maintaining ‘data' quality is critical, because great data = great fidelity.

  • Know Your Digital Piano Connection Type. First, know the size and shape of each of your input and output ports. Speaker port may be ¼" female, or you may have an entry system calling for RCA cable plugs. Note where you'll need either ‘female' or ‘male' end plugs.

  • Digital Piano Cable Hook-Ups. Typically, digital pianos are sold independent of cables and accessory sound boards. However, what are some do's and don'ts of cable selection? Avoid stranded wire cable when you can get solid wire cables, especially for your studio monitor speaker system, headphones, and any connection to an external mixer unit or a music sampler and re-record device. Get ‘pro' quality professional speaker cables for all connections, and kno`w that your signal will be less subject to degrading.

  • Measurements. Before selecting the cable lengths for you digital piano and music production area, tape measure the outer most locations for your studio monitor speakers, as well as the location for your external mixer unit or any other connectable sound production ‘external' components to your system. You can get pro quality professional speaker cables from 3-foot lengths on up to lengths suitable for a large stage. Longer length equals higher price. Make sure to give yourself extra cable length, as a "buffer" in case your studio set up changes down the road.

  • External MIDI Controller Or Storage Accessories. Similar to speaker system issues, your connections from your digital piano to your external mixer such as a Mackie 12 channel unit require typically a ¼ inch solid cable. However, your external MIDI controller or memory unit may be connected through your mixer via special connector terminals, which you need to map out before buying.
