Carl Zeiss may be the first name you think of when the subject is binoculars. The company pioneered many developments in lenses and binoculars; and they continue to innovate without ever compromising quality. A company with five Academy Awards to its name for technological advances in camera lenses has a reputation to uphold; uphold it they do.
Most Zeiss binoculars use the compact roof prism design. Sizes range from 8x20 to an unusual 20x60 that Zeiss claims can be used without a tripod, thanks to a unique image stabilization technology that requires no power supply. In addition to a wide array of binoculars, the Zeiss sports optics line includes monoculars (including a 3x eyepiece extension for binoculars), night vision scopes, spotting scopes, riflescopes, and shooting glasses. The smallest pocket-size models can be used indoors, but they are not traditional opera glasses.
Prices range from high to higher, with the 20x60 image stabilization model selling for over $4,000. Nothing from Zeiss is cheap, but then again nothing from Zeiss is cheaply made, either.
Zeiss is involved, famously, in optics and other technologies for astronomical observatories and planetariums as well as applications in ophthalmology, microscopy, cinematography, and other industries.
