Optics And Fully Coating. The best binoculars have optics that are "fully multi-coated" (multiple layers on all glass surfaces). "Fully coated" means all surfaces that come in contact with the air have at least one layer. "Coated" means that at least some surfaces have been coated.

•  Coatings
Major brands have developed propriety coatings that perform special functions or that confer some specific advantage, such as scratch resistance, over generic coatings.

•  Prisms
Porro prisms (the classic binocular shape, with the objective lenses set farther apart than the eyepieces, uses Porro prisms) are either BaK-4 or BK7. BaK-4 prisms are finer glass, resulting in less scattering of light.

scopes

•  Brightness
Manufacturers promote different measures of brightness that are not necessarily comparable across brands. Rather than rely on such numbers, it is always best to do a side-by-side comparison, preferably in twilight conditions, to judge for yourself. At equivalent quality, a larger objective always provides more light; so compare size-for-size.

•  Resolution
Resolution is the ability to distinguish closely spaced details at a distance. With two objective lenses of the same quality, the larger should provide better resolution. So you should compare across brands at the same objective size and magnification. Resolution is affected by collimation (true alignment of the optical elements) as well as coatings and glass quality.

Mechanics

•  Ease of operation
Check how easily you can focus on objects at different distances. Check how easily you can set the diopter adjustment that allows both eyes to be in focus. Check that you can adjust the distance between eyepieces to the distance between your eyes.

•  Eye relief
If you wear eyeglasses, ensure there is sufficient eye relief for you to use the binoculars while wearing your glasses.

•  Construction and appearance
Do you like the way the instrument looks? Is the finish durable? Is it Waterproof, sealed, gas–filled? Is it comfortable in your hands? Is it made of a hard, lightweight material? Can it withstand the occasional accidental drop, or will that result in expensive repairs? Are there lens caps? Is there a weatherproof, durable, protective carrying case (especially if the binoculars are not weatherproof themselves)? Is the neckstrap comfortable?
