Compact Binoculars To Save Weight And Size
Compact binoculars use a roof prism design that allows the objective lenses to be aligned in straight tubes with the eyepieces, resulting in a slim design that is easy to carry and easy to handle.

Comparing Compact Binoculars With Traditional Sizes. Traditional binoculars have their objective lenses set wider apart than the eyepieces. They use sets of Porro prisms to invert the image so you see the scene right side up.
Look For Porro Prisms. At a given magnification and objective lens size, Porro prisms provide a brighter image than roof prisms. Manufacturers have made advances in lens and prism coatings that mitigate this effect, resulting in excellent image quality - at the cost of more expensive optics.
Smaller Size Trade Off In Viewing. There is a tradeoff in choosing compact binoculars. Compact binoculars also have a narrower field of view than standard binoculars of the same nominal size.
Manufacturer Offerings. Virtually all manufacturers offer compact binoculars. Some manufacturers offer no traditional Porro binoculars at all any more.
