Deciding What Works: Patio Lantern Features
Patio lanterns run on more than lamp oil and candles. Today’s patio lanterns shine via battery power, solar power, propane and electricity. If you hesitate to use patio lanterns because you live in a dry area, where burning is frowned upon, battery or solar powered lanterns provide hours of lighting without any risk of fire.
Battery powered patio lanterns usually feature automatic shut-off. If you go to bed and forget to turn the lanterns off, don’t worry. After a few hours, the lanterns turn themselves off saving battery power.
Solar patio lanterns provide hours of illumination using one of the world’s most efficient sources—the sun. Simply place your lantern in a sunny area and the sun does the rest. It charges up the solar cells every day so that you always have lighting at night.
Gas or Oil Filled Patio Lanterns
Propane gas patio lanterns provide hours of lighting from a container of liquid propane. With a propane lantern, you control the flame level making it easy to dim the lighting for a touch of romance or increase it for gatherings. An added benefit to propane is that its scent attracts mosquitoes. If you place the lantern a distance away from where you will gather, you can enjoy the evening without these biting bugs flying around.
Lamp oil or citronella fueled patio lanterns provide hours of lighting. Simply refill the oil canister as needed and light the wick. Citronella offers an additional benefit. It is an all-natural bug repellent.
Knowing What you Need
The choice is yours. When purchasing patio torches, expect one smaller lamp to cover about a ten-foot area. If you have a small patio, one tabletop lantern is often enough. For larger areas, consider placing or hanging a lantern in each corner. This is especially useful if you do have biting pests because it provides a barrier around your patio keeping your nights bug free and completely enjoyable.
