  • Caliburn: According to the oldest Arthurian legends, and Sir Thomas Malory, author of Le Morte d'Arthur, the sword pulled out of the stone was not Excalibur, but Caliburn. According to this legend, Caliburn was broken in a fight with King Pellinor.
  • Excalibur Sword: Arthur's second sword in the Arthurian legends, given to him by the Lady of the Lake. Excalibur was a powerful sword, with a name that meant "cut steel." Also, its magical scabbard could protect its wearer from injury. It is not until the scabbard is stolen that Arthur is wounded in battle, at the hands of his illegitimate son Mordred.

  • Æsahættr: Also called the God-destroyer, but usually the Subtle Knife of Cittagazze. This is a double-bladed knife in the second and third books of the Phillip Pullman His Dark Materials trilogy. One blade of the Subtle Knife can cut through anything. The other blade can cut through the fabric between parallel worlds.
  • Kunsangi: A mythical Japanese sword, which gave its bearer the power to perform miracles and control nature. Although it is sometimes represented as a samurai sword, the origins of the legend predate the development of the katana.
  • Gram: Also called Balmung. In Norse mythology, it is the sword Sigurd (Siegfried) used to kill the dragon Fafnir. The sword originally belonged to Sigurd's father Sigmund, who pulled it out of the log where the god Odin had thrust it.
  • Sting: First Bilbo Baggins' sword in the Hobbit, then Frodo's sword in the Lord of the Rings, Sting would glow when Orcs approached.
  • Narsil: The sword of Elendil, who broke the sword into two pieces when he was killed by Sauron. A shard from this sword was used to cut the One Ring from Sauron's finger. It was later forged into Andruil, the sword of Aragorn.
