Today's knife sheaths are made from many materials and can be worn almost anywhere. Leather knife sheaths are still very popular. A leather knife sheath is durable and wears well, but can stretch with age and isn't good for certain conditions, like exposure to cold or water. It is very comfortable to wear, and an excellent material for a boot knife sheath.
A good alternative to leather is Kydex, a high performance plastic composite. Kydex is rugged and durable, and will protect your knife from all conditions, including water and extreme temperatures. Kydex doesn't need a clasp like Velcro or snaps to hold the knife in place. It also is weather resistant and won't lose its shape after years of use.Nylon web sheaths are also good, versatile knife sheaths. They are lightweight and flexible. However, they don't have the durability of leather or the weather resistance of Kydex.
For special needs, you can order a custom knife sheath. Many knifemakers and small companies make custom knife sheaths, including the decorative beaded knife sheath, which is a beautiful touch for an Old American knife look for a Bowie knife or another outdoor knife.
The most important function of a knife sheath is to protect the user from accidental cuts or punctures. When purchasing a knife sheath, make sure that it can be worn comfortably, will hold the knife in place, and will wear well over time
