Like a combat knife, a tactical knife should have a matte or bead blasted coating on the blade and the handles so it does not reflect light. It should also be able to perform many tasks for a single tool.

Tactical knives should be durable and maintain an excellent blade edge with little sharpening. Some tactical knife sheaths are sold with small, fine grit knife sharpeners, which are good in an emergency but could wear down the blade with too much use.
