Crappie Fishing Rod or Poles - Rods & Reels Combo

Distance cousins to sunfish, crappie are tasty game fish that require a long crappie fishing rod. Anglers love crappie because of their mild taste, and their availability year round. Crappie are one fish that can be caught in spring, summer, fall and winter.

White and Black Crappie are found in the United States. White Crappie reach more than five pounds during their 10-year life span and prefer hidden nooks in rivers and lakes, like fallen trees or grassy areas. Black Crappie are similar in size, but they tend to stick to clear, open water. Most anglers find spider rigging set-ups to be the best for catching Crappie, though trolling fishing rods also work effectively. Fishing in the spring months, during a Crappie's spawning, is best handled with a fly fishing rod.

Choosing a Crappie Fishing Rod

There are three things to pay attention to when choosing a Crappie fishing rod:

1. Look for a lightweight fishing rod.
2. A basic rod and reel will suffice.
3. Look for a long rod and reel combo, ten feet is usually the best bet.

While Crappie are a little more adventurous after dusk, they hide during the daylight hours. It's common to find them resting under fallen trees or in grassy areas when the sun is up. For this reason, you need a long fishing pole to reach these areas. You should position the tip of your fishing rod over the area and slowly drop the line.

Crappie rarely put up much of a struggle once hooked, so you won't need to use much force when reeling one in. Expert anglers recommend a lightweight fishing pole and even say you can skip a reel and simply tie a baited hook and fishing line to the end of the fishing rod's tip and then slowly drop it in. Crappie are a great fish for beginners because they don't require a fancy fishing rod.
