Baseball Gloves - Optimizing Your Performance
Can sports equipment make the player? There's no question that your speed, strength and conditioning work create an athlete's "foundation". However, making the consistent play and the occasional 'great play' requires that your baseball glove be the best that you can get.
The design evolution of baseball gloves mirrors the designer push and technology affecting other sports gear areas used by baseballers. Consider for a moment that baseball uniform fabrics now regularly infuse synthetic fibers, stretch
Lycra fibers, UV resistant materials, wind and water proofing fibers and other exotic blends. Similarly, as the baseball itself has moved from the original cork center to high-tech composites in order to achieve sameness and regularity, fielders have looked to shape their gloves to their playing position and the sort of ball they're likely to face.
What Should You Look For In Your Baseball Glove:
Overall Weight. Baseball gloves are sized from 10-inches to over 14 inches. Pick the glove weight that you can comfortably handle.
Glove Length. While a firstbase glove is long and well padded, your standard infielder baseball glove features a shallower pocket and shorter fingers in order to rapidly "dig out" the ball for quick throw on a double play or to the nearby base
Glove Padding. Training into your sport means "toughening" your hands, while maintaining a good "feel' of the incoming ball. Don't buy an overly padded baseball glove, as you'll deaden the "feel" and potentially miss plays. Instead, use standard glove padding, however early season use a padding insert to prevent bruising until your hand gets into shape.
Break-In Your Baseball Glove. Old-timers swear that you need to "shape" your glove to your hand and to a ball. Best way to do this is to initially apply a light leather oil treatment to your glove. Next, play light catch to lightly stretch the leather and cords. Now, you can place a ball inside the pocket, then tie a string around your baseball glove to "hold the shaped position" overnight.
